Victorian Washday

Lesson: Understanding the World

Class: RE Year: 2023 - 2024

We had a really busy time learning about how they used to wash clothes in Victorian times.  First we looked at our washing maching and how easy it is to use.  Then we got ready to wash like the Victorians did.  First we had to grate the soap to make the powder, then added water and whisked to make the soap jelly.  Then we filled the dolly tub and used the posser to make bubbles, then we used the dolly to turn the clothes and scrubbed them on the wash board.  We then squeezed as much water out as we could and hung them on the airer to dry.  Here are some pictures of how we did it.
